Tunisian Crochet Cup Cozy Pattern (Beginner-Friendly & Free!)

This Tunisian Crochet Cup Cozy is quick, practical, and confidence-building, making it the perfect first Tunisian crochet project.

Using the Tunisian Half Double Crochet stitch, this cozy creates a beautifully textured, squishy fabric that keeps your hands cool while your coffee (or tea!) stays warm. It works up fast, uses simple materials, and makes a fantastic gift or market item.

Finished Size

  • Approximately 3″ wide x 8½″ long

Custom Sizing

  • To change the length: chain any number
  • To change the width: add more rows

This makes it easy to customize for different cup sizes.


Materials

Hook

  • 5.5 mm Tunisian crochet hook - Long hook or hook with a cable

Yarn

  • Worsted weight yarn
  • 100% cotton recommended

  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge

  • 8 stitches x 6 rows = 2″ x 2″ in pattern

Gauge isn’t critical for this project, but it will affect final sizing.


Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • rep – repeat
  • Thdc – Tunisian half double crochet
  • yo – yarn over
  • FwP – forward pass
  • RetP – return pass
  • Lts – last Tunisian stitch
  • sk – skip
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • Tslst – Tunisian slip stitch
  • st(s) – stitch(es)

Special Stitch: Tunisian Half Double Crochet (Thdc)

Foundation Row

  1. Chain any number of stitches.
  2. This chain becomes your foundation row.

Forward Pass

  1. Yarn over, insert hook into the second back bump from the hook.
  2. Yarn over, pull up a loop (leave loop on hook).
  3. Continue across the chain:
    • Yarn over, insert hook into next back bump
    • Yarn over, pull up a loop
    • Keep all loops on the hook

Return Pass

  1. Yarn over, pull through one loop (this functions like a chain 1).
  2. *Yarn over, pull through three loops
  3. Repeat from * to end

Subsequent Rows

  1. Yarn over, skip the first two vertical bars
  2. Insert hook under both of the next two vertical bars, yo, pull up a loop
  3. *Yo, insert hook under both of the next two vertical bars, yo, pull up a loop
  4. Continue from * across to the last stitch
  5. Yarn over, pull up a loop in the last Tunisian stitch
  6. Work the return pass as above

Tunisian Crochet Cup Cozy – Free Pattern

Foundation Row

  • Ch 32
  • Thdc in the 2nd back bump from hook and in each back bump across
  • (Don’t forget the yarn overs!)

Return Pass

  • Ch 1
  • yo, pull through 3 loops
  • Repeat to end

Row 1

  • Skip first two vertical bars
  • Thdc in each stitch across
  • In last stitch: yo and work as Lts
  • RetP

Rows 2–8

  • Repeat Row 1

Bind Off (Last Row)

(Watch the tutorial video on how to do the bind off for this stitch HERE.)

  • Tslst in each vertical bar across
  • Insert hook under two vertical bars at a time, just like the Thdc stitch
  • On the last stitch, insert hook as for Lts
  • Fasten off, leaving a 9″ tail for seaming

Finishing

  1. Place right sides together
  2. Whip stitch the short edges together
  3. Fasten off and weave in all ends
  4. Turn right side out
