9 Best Yarn Storage Solutions (2024)

Before we get into the list of yarn storage solution products, let me share two of my favorite ways to store my yarn stash.

What is the Best Way to Store Yarn?

For crafters and crochet enthusiasts, having a well-organized and tidy yarn stash is a top priority. Storing your beloved skeins of yarn not only keeps everything neat and easily accessible but also prevents them from getting tangled or damaged.

So, what is the best way to store yarn? Let’s explore a few of my favorite solutions.

One of the most popular options is to store your yarn inside a shelving unit.

This is my current setup before I added some cloth storage cubes.

I recently started storing my yarn in our YARNstashr Bins (coming soon from our sister brand Bobble & Puff!), which fit perfectly inside these shelves.

These containers allow you to see the colors and types of yarn you have at a glance, making it easy to find the perfect skein for your next project.

You can also turn them around and label the cubes however you’d like, whether by color, yarn weight, yarn type, or even seasonally.

Another option is using an over-the-door organizer. The YARNstashr Organizer is another one of our Bobble & Puff products coming soon.

It’s perfect for storing yarn you’re currently using and also has two large compartments on the bottom for storing all of those WIPS (works in progress). This allows you to keep your stash within reach while maximizing limited space.

It also has mesh pockets on the side for storing crochet hooks, stitch markers, measuring tape, and all of those other notions, as well as crochet patterns you’ve printed out.

Commonly Asked Questions About Yarn Storage Solutions

Should I Keep Yarn in Plastic Bags?

When it comes to storing yarn, there are several factors to consider. One question that often arises is whether or not it’s okay to keep yarn in plastic bags.

While plastic bags may seem like a convenient option for organization and protection, weighing the pros and cons before deciding on the best yarn storage solution for you is important.

One advantage of using plastic bags for yarn storage is that they can help keep your yarn clean and free from dust and dirt. This is especially important if you have pets or live in a dusty environment. Plastic bags also offer some level of protection against pests like moths, which can damage your precious yarn collection.

However, there are some downsides to storing yarn in plastic bags.

Yarn must breathe, and plastic bags can restrict air circulation, leading to musty odors and potential moisture buildup. This can be particularly problematic if you live in a humid climate. Additionally, plastic bags can cause yarn to become tangled and knotted, making it more difficult to work with.

If you decide to store your yarn in plastic bags, choose breathable bags, such as mesh or fabric bags.

Alternatively, consider using other storage options like plastic bins or canvas bags, which offer both breathability and protection. Whichever method you choose, prioritize keeping your yarn in a clean, dry, and temperature-controlled environment to ensure its longevity and usability.

What About Storing Yarn in a Small Closet?

If you’re a fervent crocheter, chances are you’ve accumulated quite a stash of yarn over time. As any yarn enthusiast knows, keeping your yarn organized and easily accessible is of the utmost importance.

One common question that often arises is whether it’s possible to store yarn in a regular closet. Well, the answer is yes, but with a few considerations.

Firstly, choosing the right yarn storage solutions is important to keep your precious fibers in optimum condition. Opt for plastic bins or clear storage boxes with lids to protect your yarn from dust and potential damage.

Remember to label each container so you easily find the specific yarn you need for your next project.

Secondly, make sure the closet you choose is well-ventilated to prevent moisture build-up. Dampness can lead to mildew and mold growth. A closet with good air circulation will help maintain the quality of your yarn for years to come.

Lastly, consider temperature control. Temperature fluctuations can affect the texture and quality of your yarn. Avoid storing your yarn in a closet that experiences extreme heat or cold.

Instead, aim for a room-temperature environment to preserve the integrity of your beloved yarn.

How Can I Organize My Yarn So It Looks Pretty?

If you’re a yarn enthusiast like me, you know just how quickly your collection can grow. With so many beautiful colors and different types of yarn available, it’s easy to get carried away and end up with a jumbled mess. That’s why finding the best yarn storage solutions is essential to keep your craft supplies organized and looking pretty.

Open Shelving: Use open shelves to display your yarn collection. Arrange skeins by color or type to create a visually pleasing effect. You can use decorative baskets or bins on the shelves to hold smaller items, adding both style and organization to your display.

Hanging Baskets: Install a few decorative wall-mounted baskets or shelves to hold skeins of yarn. This option adds a touch of charm to your space while keeping your yarn easily accessible. Choose baskets that complement your decor, such as woven or metal styles.

Pegboard Display: Use a pegboard to create a customizable yarn storage solution. Hang skeins on colorful pegs or hooks, and arrange them in an artful pattern. This method allows for easy access and adds a dynamic element to your yarn storage.

Stacked Cubes: Use a set of open fabric storage cubes or wooden crates stacked vertically to organize your yarn. Arrange the yarn by color or type, and let the natural texture and colors of the yarn create an attractive display. Adding labels or small bins inside the cubes can help keep things tidy.

In conclusion, keeping your yarn organized and looking pretty is not as difficult as it may seem. Clear bins, storage cubes or shelves, and decorative yarn bowls can help you maintain a tidy craft area while showcasing your beautiful yarn collection.

So, get creative and find the best yarn storage solutions that work for you!
