If you loved making the Mosaic Star Stitch Crochet Fingerless Gloves, you’re going to feel right at home with this matching hat.

The construction is nearly identical, worked flat with the same star stitch pattern, with one key difference: instead of leaving an opening, we close the top to form a cozy beanie and finish it with a pom.
This hat is part of the Mosaic Star Stitch Trio and coordinates perfectly with the matching fingerless gloves and ear warmer. It works up quickly, highlights variegated yarn beautifully, and makes an excellent handmade gift.
The hat is worked flat from the brim up, then seamed and cinched closed at the crown.

⬇️ Crown Decreases
Decrease Method (HDC Rows Only)
Instead of working 2 hdc into each star eye:
- Work 1 hdc in the next two star stitches
- Continue across normally
- Repeat the decrease again at the end of the row, working one hdc in the second to last star, one hdc in the half star, ending with one hdc in the last st
- Work the star stitch as normal
Decrease Rows by Size
- All sizes: 2 total star stitch decrease rows
You will alternate:
- Star stitch row (no decreases)
- Decrease hdc row
🧶 Total Star Stitch Rows (Including Decreases)
| Size | Star Stitch Rows Before Decrease | Decrease Star Stitch Rows | Total Star Stitch Rows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baby | 3 | 2 | 5 |
| Toddler | 3 | 2 | 5 |
| Child | 3 | 2 | 5 |
| Adult | 4 | 2 | 6 |
| Large Adult | 4 | 2 | 6 |
Each star stitch row consists of a star stitch row followed by a half double crochet row.
Hat height should now match the measurement chart.
🪡 Last Row
Without fastening off:
- Ch 1 and sl st to the first hdc of the row to form a circle with right sides of hat facing.
- Sc in every other hdc around.
- Sl st to first sc, fasten off.
🪡 Seaming & Cinching the Crown
Using the long starting tail you left at the beginning of the brim:
- With right sides together, thread the long tail onto a yarn needle.
- Seam the hat vertically from the brim all the way up to the top, matching rows as you go and keeping your stitches neat and even.
- When you reach the opening at the top of the hat (where you worked the single crochet round), begin weaving your needle through every other single crochet around the opening.
- Once you have woven through all of the single crochets and are back to the first stitch, gently pull the yarn to cinch the opening closed.
- To secure the closure, weave your needle around the opening once in one direction, then once again in the opposite direction, catching stitches as you go.
- Fasten off securely and weave in any remaining ends.
- Turn the hat right side out.

If you’d like to see this finishing technique done step by step, this section of my crochet pumpkin tutorial shows exactly how to weave the needle under every other single crochet, cinch the opening closed, and secure the yarn by weaving in both directions:
While the project shown is different, the cinching and securing method is the same as what’s used to close the top of this hat.
🎀 Finishing
Attach a faux fur pom or yarn pom to the top of the hat.
💫 Final Thoughts
