The Beckett Crochet Blanket is all about fun texture, with a super easy stitch pattern that makes those soft, wavy lines.
The name comes from an old English word for "small brook" or "stream", which totally fits, since the stitches look just like ripples in water. (Big thanks to Christie for the awesome name!)
This blanket combines a solid worsted-weight yarn with a self-striping yarn, alternating every two rows to highlight the texture of the stitches while allowing the color changes to shine.
Although the finished blanket looks intricate, the stitch pattern is easy to learn and quickly becomes relaxing and rhythmic. Once you get into the groove, this blanket becomes a wonderful project for quiet evenings of crochet.

My Year-Long Self-Striping Yarn Experiment
This blanket is part of my year-long experiment with self-striping yarn, where I’m testing different stitches and combinations of yarn to see which ones create the most beautiful and balanced color effects.
One of the reasons the Beckett Blanket works so beautifully with self-striping yarn is the way the stitch pattern blends the color changes.
The Almond Stitch alternates groups of slip stitches and half-double crochets, creating a subtle texture while naturally breaking up the rows.
When a self-striping yarn is used on its own, color changes can sometimes happen abruptly in the middle of a row and feel very noticeable.
In this blanket, alternating the textured stitch pattern and pairing the self-striping yarn with a solid color every two rows softens those transitions. Instead of harsh color jumps, the colors flow smoothly across the fabric, almost like ripples in water.

Border
This blanket has a right and wrong side. When working the border, ensure the right side is facing you.
The Beckett Blanket stitch pattern creates gentle waves along the top and bottom edges because the stitch pattern alternates between shorter slip stitches and taller half double crochets. To help create a smooth and even border, the first round alternates slip stitches and single crochets so the stitch heights balance out across the edge.
This helps fill in the “valleys” created by the stitch pattern and prevents the border from becoming wavy or uneven.
Border Round 1
Top edge
Ch 1 and turn.
Work 2 single crochet in the first stitch.
Work single crochet in the next 3 stitches.
Slip stitch in each of the next 4 stitches.
Single crochet in each of the next 4 stitches.
Continue alternating 4 slip stitches and 4 single crochets across the top edge.
Work 2 single crochets in the final stitch.
Side 1
Along the side, work 2 single crochet in the first st, work 1 single crochet evenly into each row end, ending with 2 single crochet in the last stitch.
Bottom edge
Repeat the same stitch pattern across the bottom edge as the top edge.
Side 2
Repeat the same stitch pattern as side 1, ending with 2 single crochet in last st
Join with a slip stitch to first st from top edge.

Follow the same border instructions featured in this video tutorial for Rows 2 - 5. (This is for a Tunisian crochet blanket, but the concept is the same.)
