A No-Curl Tunisian Crochet Camping Blanket Pattern

If you’ve browsed through any of our patterns here on I Can Crochet That, then you’ve probably guessed we kind of like creating camping blankets.

Our first one was The Let’s Go Camping Blanket. Followed by ones like The Estes, The Bryn and The Pendleton dupe with the faux fur edging.

So, why another one?

Simply because the biggest complaint we receive about our Let’s Go Camping blanket is the fact that it curls so much. I mean – so so much.

It’s made using the knit stitch, and it’s really hard to combat curling when it comes to that particular Tunisian crochet stitch.

No-Curl-Tunisian-Crochet-Camping-Blanket-Pattern-01

I am always on the hunt for new Tunisian stitches that don’t curl, and when I found this newest one, I was hooked! 😉

Not only does it not curl, but when you combine this stitch with Lion Brand’s Mandala yarn, it creates a blanket so soft and enjoyable to curl up under that it’s pretty amazing.

This pattern is really simple to make. It’s one stitch and an easy border.

I hope you love making it as much as I did!

The Quinn: A No-Curl Tunisian Crochet Blanket Pattern

We’ve been going through the alphabet naming our blankets, and we’re officially on the letter Q! I just love the name Quinn.

So, meet Quinn!

The Stitches

This crochet camping blanket pattern is made with one stitch plus the border. Both are pretty easy to pick up and learn.

The Tunisian Crochet Half Double Crochet Stitch

Have you tried this stitch yet? I love it so much and definitely plan on using it in more patterns.

I think the one thing to take note of is how it can be easy to drop stitches on the return pass. Since you’re doing yarn overs on the forward pass, going through those yarn overs on the way back can be a little tricky.

But, with some practice, it’s easy peasy.

Written Instructions

To perform the Tunisian Half Double Crochet Stitch, follow these steps,:

Start with a Foundation Row: Begin by chaining any number of stitches. This will be your foundation row.

Forward Pass:

  • Step 1: Yarn over and insert your hook into the second back bump from the hook.
  • Step 2: Yarn over again and pull up a loop. Keep the loop on your hook.
  • Step 3: Continue this process across the chain – yarn over, insert the hook into the next back bump, yarn over, and pull up a loop, keeping all loops on the hook.

Return Pass:

  • Step 1: To start the return pass, yarn over and pull through one loop on the hook (this is essentially a chain 1).
  • Step 2: Then, yarn over and pull through three loops. Repeat this step (yarn over and pull through three loops) all the way across.

Subsequent Rows:

  • Step 1: Yarn over (skipping the first two vertical bars) and insert hook under both of the next two vertical bars, pull up a loop.
  • Step 2: Yarn over and insert hook under both of the next two vertical bars; continue all the way across until you get to the end.
  • Step 3: Yarn over and pull up a loop in the last Tunisian stitch.
  • Step 4: Return pass as stated above

Video Tutorials

Here’s a video tutorial walking you through this stitch and another video for the border: a simple single crochet in the back loop + slip stitches.

The Yarn

Yep, we’re obsessed with self-striping yarn. A simple search here will prove that.

I used four cakes in the color Sphinx for this pattern, but it will look fantastic in any of their colorways.

As I mentioned above, something special happens when you combine this Mandala yarn with the Tunisian half double crochet stitch. It creates a remarkably soft and snuggly texture.

Julie, Thanks for the update. I also wondered about how wide it was. I figured it was being done lengthwise, so was just going with it. 🤪 Since I’m pretty new to the Tunisian stitch, I will chalk it up to practice. Lol

Thank you for understanding Judy! I feel SO bad about the mistake, but everyone has been really kind. The crochet community is the best! :)

I'm afraid my question has been lost in a shuffle. I am struggling with this blanket, and have put it aside, wondering if I am doing something wrong. When I started this blanket, I chained 215 per the pattern instructions. After working about 4 rows, I measured, and it was over 70" wide. I'm concerned I won't have enough yarn if I continue at that size. Can you let me know what I am doing wrong, as I am very new to Tunisian, and I just can't figure this one out. Thank you.

Hi Nancy,

First off, I am very sorry for any frustration this has caused. I've been taking pattern notes on my phone as I work through them and it looks like I basically fat fingered this one and put a 2 instead of a 1! So the pattern should read "chain 115" with a 7 mm hook. Let me know if you have any other questions. Also, if you'll send me your email address, I would like to send you a code for 50% off another pattern. My email is [email protected]. Let me know if you prefer Etsy or my Shopify store. Thank you!

@Nancy Davis,Hi Nancy - I started this two days ago and I’m having the same issue! I even frogged it completely after three rows and started over again. Following to see if anyone has tips!

Please tell me if the Estes blanket will curl. I recently purchased the pattern - now I read about the Quinn and the non-curl stitch. Please let me know so I’m assured that the Estes will not curl or if I need to switch patterns.

Hi Muriel, The Estes blanket is not Tunisian crochet, but instead regular crochet, so curling won't be an issue. :)

The pattern calls for a 7mm Tunisian hook with a long cord. How long of a cord is needed? This is my first time trying Tunisian crochet.

I used a 40 inch cable.

HELP! I love this blanket, but am very new to Tunisian crochet. I have only made blocks before this. For my foundation row, I chained 215, and after my forward pass I had 429 loops on my hook. Now, I'm 4 rows in, and thought it looked huge. So, I finally measured it, and it is 70.5 inches wide! I didn't check my gauge before starting, but I just did, and I have 12.5 stitches per 4 inches. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.
