A No-Curl Tunisian Crochet Camping Blanket Pattern

If you’ve browsed through any of our patterns here on I Can Crochet That, then you’ve probably guessed we kind of like creating camping blankets.

Our first one was The Let’s Go Camping Blanket. Followed by ones like The Estes, The Bryn and The Pendleton dupe with the faux fur edging.

So, why another one?

Simply because the biggest complaint we receive about our Let’s Go Camping blanket is the fact that it curls so much. I mean – so so much.

It’s made using the knit stitch, and it’s really hard to combat curling when it comes to that particular Tunisian crochet stitch.

I am always on the hunt for new Tunisian stitches that don’t curl, and when I found this newest one, I was hooked! 😉

Not only does it not curl, but when you combine this stitch with Lion Brand’s Mandala yarn, it creates a blanket so soft and enjoyable to curl up under that it’s pretty amazing.

This pattern is really simple to make. It’s one stitch and an easy border.

The Stitches

This crochet camping blanket pattern is made with one stitch plus the border. Both are pretty easy to pick up and learn.

The Tunisian Crochet Half Double Crochet Stitch

Have you tried this stitch yet? I love it so much and definitely plan on using it in more patterns.

I think the one thing to take note of is how it can be easy to drop stitches on the return pass. Since you’re doing yarn overs on the forward pass, going through those yarn overs on the way back can be a little tricky.

But, with some practice, it’s easy peasy.

Written Instructions

To perform the Tunisian Half Double Crochet Stitch, follow these steps,:

Start with a Foundation Row: Begin by chaining any number of stitches. This will be your foundation row.

Forward Pass:

• Step 1: Yarn over and insert your hook into the second back bump from the hook.
• Step 2: Yarn over again and pull up a loop. Keep the loop on your hook.
• Step 3: Continue this process across the chain – yarn over, insert the hook into the next back bump, yarn over, and pull up a loop, keeping all loops on the hook.

Return Pass:

• Step 1: To start the return pass, yarn over and pull through one loop on the hook (this is essentially a chain 1).
• Step 2: Then, yarn over and pull through three loops. Repeat this step (yarn over and pull through three loops) all the way across.

Subsequent Rows:

• Step 1: Yarn over (skipping the first two vertical bars) and insert hook under both of the next two vertical bars, pull up a loop.
• Step 2: Yarn over and insert hook under both of the next two vertical bars; continue all the way across until you get to the end.
• Step 3: Yarn over and pull up a loop in the last Tunisian stitch.
• Step 4: Return pass as stated above

I used four cakes in the color Sphinx for this pattern, but it will look fantastic in any of their colorways.

The Pattern

Foundation row Ch 115, Thdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end (don’t forget the yarn overs!) (229 loops on your hook)

Return Pass: Ch-1, * yo pull through 3 loops * repeat to end

Row 1 sk first two vertical bars, Thdc in each st across until last st, yo, working the last st as for Lts, RetP

Rows 2 – and on repeat row 1 until blanket measures about 58″ long or until it’s the size you want

Last row Tslst in each vertical bar across row, going under 2 vertical bars at a time (just like you did for the Tunisian half double crochet stitch) to bind off, inserting hook as for Lts on the last st. Do not fasten off. Continue to border instructions.

Border: Change to 5.5 mm hook (see border video below)

Side 1: Ch 1, sc in each st along the side to last st, ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in remaining chs (9 sc total), sl st in first st on the edge

Edge 1: sl st in next st, sc blo in 9 sts, ch 1, sc blo in 9 sts, *sl st in next 2 stitches, turn, sc blo in 9 sts (from the ch you made), ch 1, turn, sc blo in next 9 sts* repeat from * to * until you get to the last st, sl st in last st

Side 2: sc in each st along the side, sl st to first st on other end,

Edge 2: Repeat Edge 1, sl st to first sc from Side 1, fasten off
