Turn thrifted finds and forgotten projects into something you'll love all over again.
Have you ever looked at an old blanket, a pile of yarn scraps, or a sweater at the thrift store and thought...I wonder what I could make with that?

That's upcycling! And it might just be one of the most fun things you can do with your crochet hook.
Let's talk about what it is, where to find stuff to work with, and some easy ideas to get you started.
So... what is crochet upcycling?
Upcycling just means taking something old and turning it into something new. Instead of throwing it away or letting it sit in a drawer, you give it a second chance.
In crochet, that might look like:
- Pulling apart an old sweater to use the yarn
- Adding a fresh border to a blanket that's seen better days
- Using up all those little bits of leftover yarn from past projects
- Mixing a few old pieces together into something totally new
You've probably seen videos of people unraveling thrift store sweaters or blankets and winding the yarn into a pretty little cake. That's upcycling, and honestly, it's so satisfying to watch!

Where do you find things to upcycle?
The best part? Items to upcycle are probably sitting in your local thrift store or even your own home, just waiting for you to find them. Here are some easy places to look:
Your own home
Check your craft room, closets, and bins. Old projects you never finished, old yarn someone gave you but never used, blankets that don't match your decor anymore...it's all fair game. This is where most stash-busting magic happens!
Thrift stores
Places like Goodwill or the Salvation Army are gold mines. Look for crochet blankets, knit sweaters (especially wool or cotton ones), and handmade pieces that just need a little refresh.
Quick tip: If you're planning to unravel a sweater, look for ones with clean edges rather than serged seams. They're much easier to take apart!
Friends and family
Ask around! Lots of people have old crochet pieces they'd love to see go to a good home. You might even be able to turn something sentimental, like grandma's old blanket, into a brand new keepsake.
Garage sales and estate sales
These are wonderful for finding handmade blankets and vintage yarn, usually at really low prices.
Facebook Marketplace and local groups
Search for things like "yarn lot," "crochet blanket," or "craft supplies." A lot of times, people are just happy someone wants it!
How to reuse yarn from old items

If you want to pull apart a sweater or old blanket to get the yarn out, here's the simple version:
- Find where the seam is (usually along the edges)
- Gently pull out the stitches. Take your time so the yarn doesn't break
- Wind it into a ball or cake as you go
- If it comes out a little kinky, just give it a light steam to smooth it back out
Not every piece will be worth unraveling, but when you find a good one, it's like getting free yarn. And who doesn't love that?
Easy upcycle project ideas to try
Here are some of my favorites, and they're all simple enough to jump right into!
Add a new border to an old blanket
This is one of the easiest ways to give something a total makeover. A pretty border can cover worn edges, even out wonky corners, and add a pop of color. It takes just a few hours and makes such a big difference!
Here are a few projects I've made that include my favorite borders:
- The Dorm Sweet Dorm blanket has a beautiful ruffle crochet border
- The Beckett Blanket has a crochet camel stitch border. It's beautifully stretchy! 🙂
- The Yvette baby blanket has a simple single crochet in the back loop border that I love
- The Wynn blanket features the front post double crochet border - definitely one of my favorites and you'll find it in quite a few of my patterns
Use scrap yarn for dishcloths and washcloths
Got a bag of random cotton yarn bits? Perfect. Dishcloths and washcloths are quick, useful, and make the sweetest little gifts.
Unravel a sweater and make something new
This is the one you've probably seen all over social media, and it's just as fun as it looks. Scarves, wraps, and smaller blankets are great uses for sweater yarn. You often end up with really nice quality yarn for almost nothing!
If you’ve never seen this process before, it’s surprisingly simple, and really satisfying to watch. Here’s a great step-by-step example of how crocheters turn thrifted sweaters into usable yarn.
Make a scrap yarn blanket
This is one of my all-time favorites. Grab all your leftover yarn and just start crocheting. I join the pieces together with either a magic knot or Russian join.
Simple stitches like the linen crochet stitch, Tunisian half double crochet stitch and the crochet crunch stitch look amazing, and the mix of colors does all the work for you. Every blanket turns out totally one-of-a-kind!
Small gifts from scraps
Mug cozies, coasters, bookmarks, little plant pot covers...these are all perfect for using up the last bits of yarn in your stash. And they make the most thoughtful handmade gifts!

Why upcycling is so worth it
Yes, it saves money. But honestly, that's not even the best part.
There's something really special about taking something forgotten, something that was just sitting in a bin or hanging on a thrift store rack, and turning it into something beautiful again. Something useful. Something loved.
It's also a little kinder to the planet, which is always a good thing.
Ready to give it a try?
You don't need to go buy anything. Just look around at what you already have and ask yourself: What could this become?
