Why Make a Tunisian Crochet Ear Warmer?

So, why should you add this Tunisian crochet ear warmer to your project list? Let me count the ways!

First, ear warmers are the ultimate winter accessory. They keep your ears toasty warm without messing up your hair like a hat might. Plus, they’re small and lightweight, making them easy to stash in a pocket or purse for those unexpected chilly moments.

Let’s not forget about the magic of Tunisian crochet. If you’re new to this technique, you’re in for a treat!

Tunisian crochet creates a thicker, denser fabric that’s perfect for keeping out the cold. It’s like knitting and crocheting had a cozy, textured baby—and the results are simply stunning.

This pattern is especially great because it uses the no-curl Tunisian half-double crochet stitch. No curling means your ear warmer will lay nice and flat right from the start.

But the best part? This ear warmer is beginner-friendly and works up super fast!

You can easily make one (or a few) in an afternoon. That makes it the ideal project for last-minute gifts or just a quick and satisfying make.

Plus, with Lion Brand Heartland yarn, you’ll have a soft, warm, and beautiful accessory that everyone will love. This ear warmer pattern is a fantastic addition to your winter crochet arsenal.

So grab your hook, and let’s get started!

Materials and Tools Needed

Are you ready to start your Tunisian crochet ear warmer? Let’s talk about what you’ll need to complete this cozy project!

Materials List:

  1. Yarn: One skein of Lion Brand Heartland – This yarn is a personal favorite for its soft texture and beautiful color palette. Plus, you only need about half a skein to complete one ear warmer, so you’ll have plenty left over for another project or a second ear warmer in a different color!
  2. Hook: A size 6.5 mm (K) Tunisian crochet hook with a cable – The cable is key here, folks! Tunisian crochet gathers a lot of stitches (especially the stitch we’ll be using), so having that extra length helps keep everything nice and smooth.
  3. Scissors: A good pair of sharp scissors – Trust me, you don’t want to be fraying your yarn with a dull pair!
  4. Tapestry Needle: For sewing the ends together and weaving in those pesky ends once you’re finished. A needle with a large eye is perfect for this.
  5. Measuring Tape: To ensure your ear warmer is the perfect size. This is especially handy if you’re making it as a gift and need to adjust the length to fit different head sizes.

Yarn Substitutions: If you don’t have Lion Brand Heartland on hand, don’t worry! Plenty of great alternatives will work just as well for this pattern. Head over to YarnSub.com to find the perfect match. Some fantastic substitutions to consider include:

  • Caron One Pound: This yarn is a fantastic substitute if you’re looking for a similar weight with plenty of color choices. It’s soft, durable, and easy to work with, making it a great option for cozy accessories like this ear warmer.
  • Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice: Another excellent alternative, Vanna’s Choice is a medium-weight yarn with a similar texture and feel. It’s widely available and comes in a variety of beautiful colors, perfect for customizing your ear warmer.
  • Red Heart With Love: This yarn offers a comparable weight and a soft, smooth texture that’s great for crochet accessories. It’s also known for its durability and is a great choice if you want your ear warmer to hold up well with frequent use.

Feel free to explore and experiment with different yarns to find the one that suits your style best. To get the best results, make sure whatever yarn you choose is similar in weight and texture to Lion Brand Heartland. Now that you’ve got all your materials ready let’s dive into the fun part—crocheting your new favorite ear warmer!

Understanding the No-Curl Tunisian Half Double Crochet Stitch

Let’s talk about the secret sauce of this pattern—the no-curl Tunisian half double crochet stitch!

If you’ve tried Tunisian crochet before, you might know that some stitches tend to curl up at the edges, which can be frustrating. But with the no-curl Tunisian half double crochet stitch, you won’t have to worry about that.

It creates a flat, even fabric that looks beautiful and lays perfectly flat right from the start.

Check out this pattern for our Quinn Crochet Camping Blanket, which uses this stitch. This pattern has become a favorite among our customers!

Why Use the No Curl Stitch? This stitch is not only great for preventing curling, but it also adds a lovely texture to your project. It’s slightly thicker than a regular crochet stitch, providing extra warmth, which is perfect for an ear warmer.

Plus, it’s easy to learn, even if you’re new to Tunisian crochet! It’s a fantastic stitch to have in your crochet toolbox, especially for projects like this one where you want a flat, cozy finish.

Written Tutorial: No Curl Tunisian Half Double Crochet Stitch

Start with a Foundation Row: Begin by chaining any number of stitches. This will be your foundation row.

Forward Pass:

  • Step 1: Yarn over and insert your hook into the second back bump from the hook.
  • Step 2: Yarn over again and pull up a loop. Keep the loop on your hook.
  • Step 3: Continue this process across the chain – yarn over, insert the hook into the next back bump, yarn over, and pull up a loop, keeping all loops on the hook.

Return Pass:

  • Step 1: To start the return pass, yarn over and pull through one loop on the hook (this is essentially a chain 1).
  • Step 2: Then, yarn over and pull through three loops. Repeat this step (yarn over and pull through three loops) all the way across.

Subsequent Rows:

  • Step 1: Yarn over (skipping the first two vertical bars) and insert hook under both of the next two vertical bars, pull up a loop.
  • Step 2: Yarn over and insert hook under both of the next two vertical bars; continue all the way across until you get to the end.
  • Step 3: Yarn over and pull up a loop in the last Tunisian stitch.
  • Step 4: Return pass as stated above

And that’s it! Keep repeating these steps until your ear warmer reaches your desired width. This stitch works up quickly and adds a unique look to your project.

How to Add the Twist to the Ear Warmer

Add a Twist: For a stylish look, add a twist before seaming the ends together. This gives the ear warmer a trendy finish.

Row 1 sk first two vertical bars, Thdc in each st across until last st, yo, working the last st as for Lts, RetP

Rows 2 – 14 repeat row 1 until ear warmer measures about 4 3/4″ wide or until it’s the size you want

Last row Tslst in each vertical bar across row, going under 2 vertical bars at a time (just like you did for the Tunisian half double crochet stitch) to bind off, inserting hook as for Lts on the last st. Leave about a 12 inch tail, draw through loop on hook. Fasten off. Continue to seaming instructions.

For Seaming – Video tutorial HERE

Step 1: Begin with the right side of your work facing upwards. Fold both ends of your piece in half, making sure to take note of where the tail ends are located.

Step 2: Bring the folded halves together in a zigzag pattern.

Step 3: Take the long tail end and thread it onto a darning needle. Start weaving it through all four layers, then reverse direction and weave through the layers again, making sure to pass through any edge loops available. Continue this weaving process until you reach the end of the work. Be mindful that the first and last weaves might be a bit challenging due to the curve of the fabric. However, as long as you manage to catch a stitch from each layer, the final appearance will be fine.

Step 4: Complete the project by fastening off and neatly weaving in any loose ends. Then, turn your work right side out to reveal the finished look.
