I’ve wanted to create a blanket pattern with this stitch for quite a while and finally got around to it.
I experimented quite a bit with different yarn types, hook sizes, and color combinations until I came up with one that I liked, and I thought you would like it as well. (You can see all of my crochet pattern designs by clicking on my bio here.)
I love how it’s a little bit retro, but you can make it look modern with your yarn choices and colors. While it looks super modern whipped up in one color, I decided to give it a spring look with this gorgeous green color and vanilla color.
Materials Needed for The Riley Blanket
Here’s what you’ll need in order to make The Riley Blanket:
Lion Brand Pound of Love in Vanilla, 2 skeins
Pound of Love in Olive, 2 skeins
For some reason, when I made this, it didn’t use much of the second skein for the vanilla and more from the second skein of the olive color – even though I did the border in vanilla. I’m guessing it’s because of a discrepancy in the yardage.
You can purchase the Pound of Love yarn online at LionBrand.com or Amazon.com. You can also often find it in-store at Joann’s.
Needless to say, you will have yarn left over from both of the second skeins.
Hook: Size 5.5 mm – I/9

The Stitch – Crochet Ripple Moss Stitch How-To
The crochet ripple moss stitch can be a little intimidating at first because of the counting required and the skipped stitches, but I promise you’ll get the hang of it quickly and won’t need to access the pattern.
After the foundation row, it’s a one-row repeat.
This is an intermediate-level stitch, and I would wait to try it until you have some other crochet stitches under your belt.
Video tutorial
This stitch has a chain multiple of 19 plus 18 extra. You might want to try a small swatch to get the hang of it before you move on to the larger blanket. The video tutorial calls for chaining 37.
You’ll chain 246 for the Riley blanket, so that’s 12 x 19 = 228 + 18 = 246 chains.

Pattern Description:
Meet “The Riley,” a super cozy crochet blanket pattern that rocks the ripple moss stitch like no other. It’s all about playing with two colors, alternating every couple of rows to keep things interesting.
There’s no fuss about the color changes, either; you just bring them up the sides and hide them later with a neat little border. It’s a fun project that looks awesome and feels even better.
Perfect for anyone looking to add a splash of homemade charm to their space!
Notes:
- Finished size measures 41” x 57″ long
- This blanket is a one row repeat, changing colors every 2 rows
- You do not fasten off between color changes and instead pull up the yarn along the side. You’ll cover these up with the border.
- Video tutorial for the ripple moss stitch is HERE.
- This stitch is also called the linen stitch
