How to Crochet the Tunisian Basketweave Stitch
Step 1: Crochet the Foundation Row
- Ch any multiple of 8 + 6 starting chains.
- Insert your hook into the back bump of the second chain from the hook and pull up a loop in each chain across.
- Work a standard return pass (RetP) by chaining one, then yarn over, pull through two loops across until one loop remains on the hook.
Step 2: Work the Basketweave Pattern
Variation 1: Tunisian Reverse Stitch + Tunisian Knit Stitch
Rows 1-4: Tks 4, Trs 4 across to Last Tunisian Stitch (LTS), RetP.
Rows 5-8: Trs 4, Tks 4 across to LTS, RetP.
Repeat Rows 1-8 for pattern.
Variation 2: Tunisian Purl Stitch + Tunisian Knit Stitch
Rows 1-4: Tks 4, Tps 4 across to LTS, RetP.
Rows 5-8: Tps 4, Tks 4 across to LTS, RetP.
Repeat Rows 1-8 for pattern.
Variation 3: Tunisian Purl Stitch + Tunisian Simple Stitch
Rows 1-4: Tss 4, Tps 4 across to LTS, RetP.
Rows 5-8: Tps 4, Tss 4 across to LTS, RetP.
Repeat Rows 1-8 for pattern.
Step 3: Bind Off
For the final row, use a slip stitch bind-off, matching the stitch pattern:
✔ Loosely slip stitch in each Tks as for Tks.
✔ Slip stitch in each Trs as for Trs.
✔ Slip stitch in each Tps as for Tps.
✔ Slip stitch in each Tss as for Tss.
✔ Slip stitch the last stitch as LTS.
Tips for Success
✔ Keep Even Tension – The mix of raised and recessed stitches can create uneven edges. A border helps!
✔ Check Your Stitch Count – Tunisian stitches are worked across a foundation row, so always count your loops.
✔ Combat Curling – Use a larger hook size or block your finished piece.
