Tunisian Crochet Triangle Scarf Pattern: A Cozy and Stylish Accessory

Tunisian crochet mixes knitting and traditional crochet. It makes a dense, textured fabric great for scarves.

What is Tunisian Crochet?

Tunisian crochet, also known as the Afghan stitch, is a fun and unique crochet method that gives your projects a special look and texture. Instead of a regular hook, you’ll use one with a long cable and stopper, creating a cozy, woven-like fabric that’s perfect for blankets, scarves, and even clothing!

Benefits of Crocheting a Triangle Scarf

Crocheting a triangle scarf is a great way to practice the tunisian half double crochet stitch. This stitch makes a cozy, textured fabric perfect for staying warm and stylish. Triangle scarves are super easy to wear and style in lots of different ways. Plus, their fun shape adds a cute, fashionable touch to any outfit!

Materials Needed for Your Tunisian Crochet Triangle Scarf

To make a beautiful Tunisian crochet triangle scarf, you need a few things.

First up, the yarn.

I chose Lion Brand Mandala Ombre in Wonder and Lion Brand Color Theory in Moonbeam.

I’m a huge fan of these yarns and have pattern with each one. Check out the Tunisian crochet sampler blanket that uses the Ombre yarn in Felicity (one of my favorite colorways!) and the Tunisian crochet striped blanket with the faux fur edge.

Next, you’ll need a Tunisian crochet hook.

A Tunisian crochet hook is similar to a regular crochet hook, but it has a cable and stopper attached in order to hold multiple loops at once. For smaller projects, you can use a Tunisian hook that is longer than a regular hook and does not include a cable.

But for this project, you’ll need a hook with a cable like this one.

Are you looking to purchase a set? Check out my post about how to choose the perfect set for you.

Along with your yarn and hook, have sharp scissors ready to cut excess yarn. Also, keep a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

With these simple items, you’re ready to start making your Tunisian crochet triangle scarf.

Step-by-Step Guide: Mastering the Tunisian Half Double Crochet Stitch

The Tunisian half double crochet (Thdc) stitch is the heart of this scarf. It creates a sturdy, textured fabric. Best of all? This Tunisian crochet stitch doesn’t curl like a lot of them do.

(Please note: since this scarf has an increase on one side, your Return Pass after the foundation row is different than the regular Thdc RetP. I have included instructions in the pattern below.)

Start with a Foundation Row: Begin by chaining any number of stitches. This will be your foundation row.

Forward Pass:

  • Step 1: Yarn over and insert your hook into the second back bump from the hook.
  • Step 2: Yarn over again and pull up a loop. Keep the loop on your hook.
  • Step 3: Continue this process across the chain – yarn over, insert the hook into the next back bump, yarn over, and pull up a loop, keeping all loops on the hook.

Return Pass:

  • Step 1: To start the return pass, yarn over and pull through one loop on the hook (this is essentially a chain 1).
  • Step 2: Then, yarn over and pull through three loops. Repeat this step (yarn over and pull through three loops) all the way across.

Subsequent Rows:

  • Step 1: Yarn over (skipping the first two vertical bars) and insert hook under both of the next two vertical bars, pull up a loop.
  • Step 2: Yarn over and insert hook under both of the next two vertical bars; continue all the way across until you get to the end.
  • Step 3: Yarn over and pull up a loop in the last Tunisian stitch.
  • Step 4: Return pass as stated above
