Tunisian Crochet Waffle Stitch Blanket Pattern

Here are all of the details to create this cozy waffle blanket:

NOTES:

  • Finished sizes: Baby blanket: 39" wide x 38" long without border, Lapghan: 36" x 48", Throw: 42" x 58"
  • Different sizes are marked as follows Baby blanket (Lapghan, Throw)
  • The Tunisian crochet waffle stitch is a multiple of 3 + 2 starting chains
  • Tunisian crochet waffle stitch tutorial video is HERE
  • Border video tutorial is HERE (but please see border instructions for the slight difference in this pattern and the video instructions
  • See “special stitches” section for how to do the very last row with Tslst trs. I also show it in the waffle stitch tutorial video.

SIZE CALCULATIONS: (without border), (yards include a 4% buffer)

Baby Blanket: 39" wide x 38" long, ch 134, approx. 1600 yards of yarn

Lapghan: 36" wide x 48" long, ch 128, approx. 1728 yards of yarn

Throw: 42" wide x 58" long, ch 149, approx. 2533 yards of yarn

7mm Tunisian crochet hook with long cable

6mm regular crochet hook for border

Insert hook in back vertical bar, yo, pull up a loop.

XLTfpdc Extra Long Tunisian Front Post Double Crochet

yarn over, insert hook under the front and back vertical bars of the stitch 3 rows down, yarn over, pull up a loop, chain 1, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook.

Lts Last Tunisian stitch

insert hook under both vertical bars of the last stitch and complete as for Tunisian simple stitch

RetP Return Pass

ch 1, *yo, pull through the next 2 loops*, repeat between * and * until only one loop remains on the hook

Tslst Trs

Bring up a loop in the back vertical bar, pull through loop on hook as for slip stitch

Foundation row Ch 134 (128, 149), pull up a loop in 2nd back bump and in each back bump across (134 (128, 149) loops on hook), RetP

Row 1 Trs across to last stitch, working the last st as for Lts, RetP

Row 2: Tss across to last stitch, working last st as for Lts, RetP

Row 3: Tss 1, XLTfpdc, *Tss 2, XLTfpdc*, repeat from * to * to last two sts, Tss, working last st as for Lts, RetP

Row 4: trs across to last stitch, working last st as for Lts, RetP

Row 5: Tss across to last stitch, working last st as for Lts, RetP

Rows 6 - 129 (180, 218): Repeat rows 3 - 5, ending with a row 3, move on to last row

Last row: Tslst trs (see special stitches section - I also show how to do this row in the tutorial video)

Do not fasten off, proceed to border instructions

Border: switch to 6 mm hook

Round 1: ch 1, 2sc in same space, sc in each stitch down edge to corner, 2sc in last stitch, 2sc in first stitch; sc in each st across, 2sc in last st, 2sc in first stitch, sc in each stitch along edge, 2sc in last stitch, 2sc in first stitch, sc in each st across, 2sc in last stitch, slip stitch to first sc

For the rest of the border, follow the instructions in this video, but instead of doing 9 dc in corner, do 7 dc in corner

Here are the written out instructions:

Round 2: work dc in corner, work 3 more dc in same st, dc in next st, dc across to next corner

*work 7 dc in corner, dc in next st, dc across to next corner*, rep from * to * around blanket until you get to the first dc worked (which is a total of 4 dc in that corner), work 3 dc in same st as first dc (7 dc total in last corner), sl st to first dc, ch 2 (does not count as st)

Round 3: fpdc in first st, *bpdc in next st, fpdc in next st*, rep from * to * around entire blanket, sl st to first st of row

Fasten off, weave in all ends.
