If you're looking for an easy crochet scarf pattern that's perfect for beginners, this one is a great place to start!

Made with just two basic crochet stitches, the single crochet and double crochet, this scarf has a beautiful texture without any complicated stitch combinations.
It's cozy, easy to customize, and a great project for practicing your crochet skills while making something you'll actually want to wear.
And here's a little fun fact about this pattern: I originally designed it for my very first crochet course!
I've decided to bring it out of the archives and share it as a free pattern here on the blog, complete with a video tutorial.
Whether you're brand new to crochet or just looking for a relaxing project, I think you'll enjoy this one.

Why You'll Love This Easy Crochet Scarf

One of my favorite things about crochet is how you can combine the simplest stitches to create something beautiful.
That's exactly what this scarf does!
Instead of learning a complicated stitch pattern, you'll alternate single crochet and double crochet stitches across each row.
The result is a soft, textured scarf that looks more interesting than rows of plain stitches but is still easy enough for beginners.
Here's why this pattern is a great choice:
- Only two basic stitches: If you know how to single crochet and double crochet, you're ready to get started.
- Easy one-row repeat: Once you finish the foundation row, you'll repeat the same row until your scarf reaches your desired length.
- Customizable length: Make your scarf as long or as short as you'd like.
- Beautiful texture: The alternating stitch heights give the scarf a lovely, slightly bumpy appearance.
- Optional tassels: Add a fun finishing touch to both ends of your scarf.
What Stitches Are Used in This Crochet Scarf?
This beginner crochet scarf uses two of the most common crochet stitches: the single crochet (sc) and double crochet (dc).
The single crochet is a shorter, more compact stitch, while the double crochet is taller.
When you alternate these stitches across each row, they create a subtle textured pattern.
It's a great way to practice both stitches and get comfortable switching between them.
And the best part? Once you've completed the first row, the rest of the scarf follows the same simple repeat!

What Yarn Should You Use?
For my scarf, I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease in Blush Heather.
It's a worsted-weight (category 4) yarn that creates a cozy scarf with beautiful stitch definition.
The soft pink color is one of my favorite things about this particular scarf, especially paired with the tassels on each end.
You can absolutely experiment with other worsted-weight yarns, too!
A solid color will help show off the stitch pattern, but I think this design could also be fun with a self-striping yarn.
Just keep in mind that different yarns can affect the finished size and drape of your scarf.
How Do You Customize the Size?
One of the nice things about this easy crochet scarf pattern is that you can adjust the size to suit your preferences.
The original pattern begins with a chain of 30, which creates 28 stitches across each row.
To make a wider scarf, you can increase the starting chain by an even number of stitches. To make a narrower scarf, decrease it by an even number.
For the length, simply continue repeating Row 2 until your scarf measures as long as you'd like.
Want a longer scarf that you can wrap around your neck a couple of times? Just keep crocheting!
Prefer something shorter? Stop whenever you're happy with the length.

How to Add Tassels to Your Crochet Scarf

I love the look of tassels on this scarf! They're completely optional, but they're a fun way to finish off the ends.
Here's how to add them:
- Cut four lengths of yarn, each approximately 40 cm (15.5 inches) long, and fold them in half.
- Insert your crochet hook into every other stitch along the end of the scarf and pull up the folded yarn loop.
- Yarn over and pull all the ends through the loop on your hook.
- Gently pull the yarn ends with your fingers to secure the tassel.
- Repeat in every other stitch along both ends of your scarf.
And that's it! Your easy crochet scarf is finished.
Tips for Crocheting Your First Scarf

If you're newer to crochet, here are a few things to keep in mind as you work on this project.
Count your stitches. Each row should have 28 stitches. Checking your stitch count regularly will help you keep the sides of your scarf straight.
Pay attention to the turning chain. The chain 2 does not count as a stitch in this pattern, so you'll work your first double crochet into the first stitch of each row.
Don't worry about crocheting quickly. Take your time getting comfortable with the stitch repeat. Before long, you'll find yourself working through the rows without having to think about every stitch.
Make it your own. Try a different yarn color, adjust the length, or leave off the tassels for a simpler look.
A Simple Crochet Scarf You'll Want to Make Again

There's something so satisfying about turning a couple of basic crochet stitches into a finished project.
This scarf is a reminder that you don't need complicated techniques to make something beautiful!
I especially love that this pattern started as part of my very first crochet course. It's fun to revisit those early designs and share them with a whole new group of crocheters.
I hope you enjoy making this scarf as much as I enjoyed designing it.
