Take your crochet skills to the next level with our Tunisian crochet scarf pattern. It’s an easy project that uses self-striping yarn plus two easy-to-learn Tunisian crochet stitches.
Tunisian crochet, also known as the “Afghan Stitch,” blends knitting’s elegance with crochet’s flexibility. Learning this technique opens up a world of creative possibilities. It’s perfect for making a stylish scarf from self-striping yarn.
If you’ve visited our website before or made any of our patterns, then you know we’re a little obsessed with Tunisian crochet + self-striping yarn.
I first discovered my love of both when I designed the Autumn Ombre Scarf. I mixed a solid-colored yarn and a self-striping yarn with the Tunisian Simple Stitch, and well, the rest is history. I went on to create many more patterns combining these two loves. (I link a few at the bottom of this post!)
For those new to Tunisian crochet, I highly recommend downloading our Beginner’s Guide, which you can find here. This guide walks you through the basics and will help you start on the right foot.
Alright, let’s explore everything you need to make this scarf, including the stitch tutorials and the pattern itself!

Essential Materials and Tools for Your Tunisian Crochet Scarf
Making a beautiful Tunisian crochet scarf begins with the right materials.
You’ll need self-striping yarn, like Lion Brand Mandala, for its stunning colors. Also, you’ll need the right Tunisian crochet hooks and tools to get the scarf’s texture and look just right.
Choosing the Perfect Self-Striping Yarn
There are many self-striping yarns to choose from for your scarf. Lion Brand Mandala yarn is a favorite of mine, with lots of gorgeous colorways. Its special self-striping feature makes crocheting easy and fun.
I’ve worked with this yarn extensively and have always been pleased with the results of my projects. But if you’d like to explore other options for self-striping yarn, visit YarnSub.com.
Required Tunisian Crochet Hooks and Accessories
- Size 6.0 mm Tunisian crochet hook – You can either use a long one with a stopper on the end like this one or one that has a cable like these
- Tapestry needle: This tool is great for weaving in ends and finishing your scarf.
- Stitch markers: They can help making sure you insert your hook into that right spot on the ends

The Stitches
For this scarf, you’ll need to know two Tunisian crochet stitches. The Tunisian crochet reverse stitch and the smock stitch.
Tunisian Crochet Reverse Stitch
This stitch adds fantastic texture to your crochet projects. It also helps with curling.
If you’re familiar with Tunisian crochet, then you might know the issue with curling. This keeps a lot of people from continuing on with this fiber craft because they get annoyed with the curling and I totally get that!
But there are ways you can prevent it and one of those ways is beginning your project with a stitch that doesn’t curl – such as the Tunisian crochet reverse stitch.
For more ways to prevent curling in Tunisian crochet, you can download our beginner’s guide, which includes a section on this topic, or visit this post, “9 Ways to Prevent Tunisian Crochet from Curling.”
For written instructions for this stitch, see the section titled “Special Stitches” below.
Tunisian Crochet Smock Stitch
I have a full video and photo tutorial for this stitch here. The video tutorial shows how I did this stitch with two colors, but the photo tutorials show it with just one color.
For written instructions for this stitch, see the section titled “Special Stitches” below.
