🧶 1. The Estes Blanket
Stitch: Linen Stitch
Yarn: Self-striping worsted weight yarn (medium / 4)

If you’re new to crochet, this is the perfect project to start with. The linen stitch is a simple one-row repeat that creates a woven, knit-like texture. The self-striping yarn does all the colorwork for you, so there’s no need to switch colors or weave in a bunch of ends.

🪶 4. The Finley Blanket
Stitches: Bean Stitch + Half Double Crochet

The Finley Blanket is one of my most popular beginner patterns—and for good reason. It looks advanced but it’s actually made from two easy stitches you can learn in minutes. The bean stitch adds gorgeous texture that beginners love mastering.

This blanket looks complex but is surprisingly simple. If you’ve got the basics down, the waffle stitch is a fun next step that adds beautiful dimension. Plus, the added fringe gives it a cozy, modern finish.

🪄 Tips for Crocheting Your First Blanket

1. Start with the right yarn.
Choose a medium-weight (4) yarn in a light color so you can see your stitches clearly. Self-striping yarns are perfect because they add color without extra effort.
2. Pick the right hook.
Check your yarn label or pattern for the recommended hook size. For most medium-weight yarns, a 5.5 mm (I/9) or 6 mm (J/10) hook works great.
3. Don’t skip the foundation chain practice.
Spend a few minutes getting comfortable with your tension on your chain and first row—it’ll make the whole blanket smoother.
4. Focus on repetition, not perfection.
Blankets are a fantastic way to get into a crochet rhythm. Every row will make you a little more confident.
5. Finish strong.
Weaving in ends, adding a simple border, or even fringe can make your beginner blanket look polished and professional.
