The Kara Blanket – An Easy Textured Crochet Blanket Pattern

This easy textured crochet blanket pattern features raised stitches, an abundance of tassels, and a beautiful yarn that is soft and incredible to work with.

Ever since I designed the Raised Stitches Shawl Pattern, I knew I wanted to someday make a blanket with the same raised stitches.

After experimenting with a couple of different yarns, I ended up using the same yarn I used for the shawl.

The other ones I tried before this one created a really stiff blanket that felt like covering myself with a piece of cardboard.

Obviously not something you want in a blanket.

The Kara Blanket | An Easy Textured Crochet Blanket Pattern

If you’re looking for a modern-looking crochet blanket featuring just a handful of different stitches, the Kara blanket is it.

The Yarn

As I mentioned above, I used the same yarn as I did for the Raised Stitches Shawl – Lion Brand’s Heartland Yarn.

I love the look of a neutral color blanket, so I chose the color Dry Tortugas, but they have several other neutral yarn colors to choose from:

• Acadia – I used this one in this baby blanket
• Grand Canyon – I used this one for this shawl and for this linen stitch blanket pattern
• Great Smoky Mountains – I used this one for this scarf
• Mount Rainier

The Stitches

When it comes to regular crochet stitches and creating modern look crochet projects, there are a few stitches that are my go-to’s:

Front Post Double Crochet & Back Post Double Crochet

By alternating these stitches, you get the raised stitch look on one side. You can see how to do both of these stitches in our waffle stitch video below.

If you’ve made or looked at the Raised Shawl Pattern, then you know I combined half double crochet stitches with front post and back post half double crochet.

But for the Kara blanket pattern, I combined herringbone half double crochet with front post and back post double crochet.

Why? Because it just looked better.

Having the front and back post stitches a little higher than the herringbone stitch, helped everything lay flat and come together beautifully.

The Kara blanket is all about luxury. It’s made with a beautiful neutral color yarn that is super soft and enjoyable to work with. The raised stitches give it a modern touch and the extra amount of tassels give it a higher-end look.

This is the perfect blanket to snuggle up under during those cold winter months. It also looks gorgeous displayed on your couch, bed, or a blanket ladder.

Notes:

• Finished size measures 43″ wide x 60″ long (without tassels)
• To change the width, here are a few size options:
• For 30″ width, chain 97
• For 39″ width, chain 125
• For 47″ width, chain 167
• For 60″ width, chain 209
• To change the length, simply add more rows
• ch 1 does not count as stitch
• 2sc means 2 single crochet in same stitch

Row 1 ch 153, hhdc in 2nd ch from hook, hhdc next 11 sts, *dc next 2 sts, hhdc next 12 sts*; repeat from * to * across to end, ch 1, turn (152 sts)

Row 2 hhdc in 1st st, hhdc in next 11 sts, *fpdc in next 2 sts, hhdc in next 12 sts*; repeat from * to * across to end, ch 1, turn (152 sts)

Row 3 hhdc in 1st st, hhdc in next 11 sts, *bpdc in next 2 sts, hhdc in next 12 sts*; repeat from * to * across to end, ch 1, turn (152 sts)

Repeat rows 2 and 3 for rest of pattern

Finish

Do not fasten off yarn

Border

Side 1: ch 1, 2sc in same st, evenly sc along side in each st, 2sc in last st

• Cut a piece of 4-inch long cardboard
• Wrap yarn around cardboard about 30 times See photo E
• Cut off yarn See photo F
• Cut an 8-inch piece of yarn, thread under yarn on cardboard and tie loosely at the top of the tassel See photos G and H
• Cut ends of yarn and remove from cardboard carefully See photo I
• Position the piece of 8-inch yard in the middle of the tassel and tie snuggly See photo J
• Fold yarn over 8-inch piece See photo K
• Cut another piece of yarn about 7 inches long and tie snuggly around the tassel about 1 inch from the top See photo L
• Trim tassel evenly See photo M
• With tapestry needle, tie onto corners of blanket and each raised stitch section See photos below
